Part 5 | Building a Film Production Company as an Indie Filmmaker

What a thrill I’m getting writing this piece today! It is indeed with joy in my heart and the most relishing sigh of relief that I announce that we have found our director!!! I am so happy that this bit is over and we can finally get some work done!
The names of my team will be revealed in due course, but at this point, join me in celebrating as I truly have found a person who shares my passion and commitment to this story.
Catch up on last month’s update if you’re a bit lost and wandered here (really pleased to have you on my blog), and as you can maybe tell, I am building a production company called Melon House on the back of my first produced feature film – adanne.
So here are some fun bits we got up to this month:
- Hired an entertainment lawyer
- Drafted and sent out our first production contract
- Got our second patron payment
- Edited the script with the Director, and now we have a LOCKED script
- The director’s treatment is underway
- Started looking for crew members and discussing casting options more seriously
- Began considering shooting locations more seriously as we have drawn it down to two main cities: Ibadan and Enugu.
Overall, I think May was very successful, and we were able to close off on major roadblocks that were stalling the production. Going into June, I am hoping to settle on a shooting location as it seems to be a priority right now and maybe oversee crew hiring.
I thought to do something different with this post (perhaps we could keep it going for the remainder of these updates), but I thought it would be cool to share with you bits in the month that I found inspiring and pushed me creatively. So I have linked my favourite content that spoke to me, and I hope you like it.

In the meantime, I think it is fair that I share that I am scared. I am super duper scared and sometimes even get overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of work being put into creating adanne, the financial investment and the expectation I have for the project. I am so nervous, and it wouldn’t be honest to not share my fears, especially at this juncture. I, however, also know that there is nothing more that I enjoy than creating and what more pleasure is there than producing my work.
At this point, I also want to shout out my partner and founding member, Lotanna. They have supported me in so many ways in putting all this together. We continue to solve problems and stride on like it’s nothing, and I am blessed to have such a solid partnership behind me at a time like this. Thank you so much for existing!
Alrighty, that’s all from me this month. June looks like a lot of work but I am so excited because casting is almost here!
See you later.
