Building a Film Production Company as an Indie Filmmaker

I suppose the best way to start this post is by wishing you a happy new year and probably asking how you have been. Could you pardon me, however, for choosing to skip over the over-whipped pleasantries?
I abandoned you, rightfully so.
Try studying for a master’s degree, working creative and corporate jobs, being in a committed relationship, a loving daughter and friend in your community, travelling the world while also maintaining being the hottest girl in the world.
Exhausting, I tell you.
For free though, I would tell you that I did miss you. Not necessarily for the lack of writing but more for having an audience for it, so as much as I am glad to be back on my blog… I am eternally thankful that you waited for me. Your presence is almost eminent to the essence of my purpose, and I dearly cherish all our stories.
Now that a little chit-chat has been done, how about we catch up?

While I was away, I did indeed start a company…a production company at that, called; Melon House Production. For my steadfast readers, this name sure doesn’t sound unfamiliar as we produced our first short film in 2022. I do reference my founding of Melon House in recent times as a pivotal moment in my adulthood and more importantly on my creative journey. So here are a few achievements under our belt.
Catch up on my 2022 recap here
2022 – Shot our first short film titled BOO’D UP
2022 – First private screening in Accra, Ghana
2022 – Two public screenings in Lagos, Nigeria
2022 – Two private screenings in London
2023- First festival screening in the United Kingdom
2023 – Registered as an LLC
2024 – Started developing our first feature film
2025 – Preparing for production on our first feature film
Putting this list together now, I am able to see visually the amount of work that has intentionally gone into creating Melon House exactly what she is – a production company set out to reflect cultures through storytelling.
For the most part of my journey I have left a tweet or two on the progress we have made but then I it dawned on me that my journey needed more visibility than a few lines on the internet. I decided to make this series to detail my accomplishments, failures, hardships and lessons in bringing my most passionate dream to life.
If you know me personally, you know there is nothing I love more than creating. I enjoy putting an outfit together, singing and listening to music, dancing, colours, painting, and art, and for me, film is one avenue that captures all of my desires. Although Melon House Production is being founded by me, I also want it to be a representation of where I come from, the people I am surrounded by and, of course, where I am headed, and I truly would be honoured to have you walk it with me.
My goal, though, as with most things in my life, is to showcase myself as an example of what it is like to build a production company from the ground up. I will be discussing raising funds, budget management, hiring crew members/actors, and the very peculiar treat of living in London and developing a story primarily for the Nigerian audience. I will also be talking about my journey in penetrating the entertainment/film industry which is currently recognised for being high-nosed and snobbish.
So if this is something you are interested in reading and perhaps even learning from, please do stick around. With prayers of course and a hot or cold cup of drink, because this is about to be eventful!
Wish me luck!
And see you next month !!
